DRUG UTILIZATION PATTERNS USING WHO CORE PRESCRIBING INDICATORS IN DIFFERENT OUT PATIENT DEPARTMENTS AT SECONDARY CARE HOSPITAL, KARIMNAGAR

Aim:The aim of this study is to assess the prescribing patterns medicines, apply World Health Organization (WHO) core indicators and appropriateness prescribed medicines in a pediatric unit. Materials Methods:A prospective observational drug utilization outpatients was carried out secondary care hospital for period 2 months. Patients who attended different units were included patients not willing participate excluded data collected from analyzed. Results:Out 150 patients, average number drugs per patient 4.56. The percentage with generic name found be 19.16%. Among prescriptions 49.78% essential list. antibiotics 33.33% prescribed, cephalosporin group most commonly followed by amino glycoside penicillin. Nearly, 21.80% given as intravenous without 1.43%. Only 75.6% have knowledge about their dosage schedule almost all appropriate. Conclusion:The assessment WHO helped improvise pattern, identify significant problems involved gap or caretakers understanding instructions provided consultants even minimize cost burden on patient.
